Louisiana is known for its food. Most people think of seafood, Cajun food, and of course gumbo when they think of the cuisine. But just so you'll know, we can stir up a mean bowl of chili in these parts as well. In Spanish, the term chili is from Nahuatl chili, and Carne means meat.

One of the first chili recipes dates back to the 1850s during Mexican-American War. They would take dried beef, suet, dried chili peppers, and salt, mix them together, form a brick, and let them dry. When it was time to feed the soldiers they would take a brick and boil it to make the chili. The chili we're all used to gets its roots from northern Mexico and San Antonio, Texas home of the chili queens. They made the dish an American classic when they opened the San Antonio Chili Stand at the  Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. The rest is pretty much history.

With fall upon us and the winter months to follow, people are going to need to know where to get some of the best chili in the state. By the way, It just so happens every year in March at the Cajun Chili Fest - Louisiana State Cookoff takes place in Lafayette, Louisiana. It's affectionately known as the Chili For Children Cook-Off, not only about who makes the best chili, 100% of all the proceeds from the festival go to one of three St. Jude affiliate hospitals in Louisiana, Our Lady of The Lake Children's Hospital in Baton Rouge. Though the 2020 and 2021 events had to be canceled due to COVID, it's scheduled to make a major return next year. In the meantime, shout out to the 2019 winners one more time!

LOOK: Best Beers From Every State

To find the best beer in each state and Washington D.C., Stacker analyzed January 2020 data from BeerAdvocate, a website that gathers user scores for beer in real-time. BeerAdvocate makes its determinations by compiling consumer ratings for all 50 states and Washington D.C. and applying a weighted rank to each. The weighted rank pulls the beer toward the list's average based on the number of ratings it has and aims to allow lesser-known beers to increase in rank. Only beers with at least 10 rankings to be considered; we took it a step further to only include beers with at least 100 user rankings in our gallery. Keep reading to find out what the best beer is in each of the 50 states and Washington D.C.
