Down Syndrome Association Of SWLA & iCan Shine Bike Camp
Down Syndrome Association of SWLA & iCan Shine is joining forces to host a special bike camp this summer. This is a five-day camp geared towards helping individuals with disabilities learn how to ride a two-wheeled bike. Enrollment is going on right now!
Return campers get a discounted rate of $75. The cost for New campers with Down Syndrome is $100 and $125 for campers with all other disabilities. iCan Shine Bike Camp is an annual event that takes place in several states across the country, including here in Lake Charles. The Down Syndrome Association of SWLA & ICan Shine Bik Camp is going to start on June 13, 2022, at the Burton Coliseum Complex (7001 Gulf Hwy.) in Lake Charles. Just as explained in the video, trained professionals and volunteers will start off using customized adapted equipment to help campers get comfortable riding a bike. Each day will be in increments of 75-minute sessions where they will work on balance, developing skills, etc. At the end of the five-day period, the ultimate goal is to teach campers how to ride a two-wheeled conventional bike.
To be eligible to participate campers must:
Have a disability.
Be at least eight years old.
Be able to side-step to both sides.
Be able to walk without a walker or cane.
Have a minimum inseam measurement of 20 inches from the floor.
Weigh 220 pounds or less.
NOTE: A parent/legal guardian or an authorized adult responsible for the Rider must remain on-site for the duration of each day's 75-minute session.
