Watch Starship Explode in Amazing Display of Fire Over Texas
On Thursday, January 16th, SpaceX's Starship launch in Texas suffered a catastrophic failure when the upper stage exploded just minutes after its launch. This was the spacecraft's seventh test flight, and thankfully, it was an unmanned mission which resulted in zero injuries or lives lost.
The SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk, was quoted as saying, " Success is uncertain, but entertainment is guaranteed!", and 8 1/2 minutes into the flight the Texas sky was lit ablaze in a very expensive explosive show. It is assumed that the upper stage rocket was the location of the explosion.
There have been multiple videos of the explosion posted on social media.
In the videos that have been posted of the explosion it looks as if the upper stage exploded while the spaceship was flying over the Caribbean near the Turks and Caicos. As the debris re-entered the earth's atmosphere the flaming streams and fireballs could almost be mistaken for a beautiful fireworks display if you didn't know what you were watching.
Katie Tice, who is the senior quality systems engineering manager made the statement, "We can confirm that we did lose the ship." This statement was made during the SpaceX live feed. Later on, Thursday it was said that early findings are indicating that a fire had occurred in the rocket that led to a rapid unscheduled disassembly.
This mission wasn't a complete failure. SpaceX was able to retrieve the returning fuel booster of Starship after the launch. Bill Nelson, NASA administrator, even congratulated SpaceX for the completion of their 7th test flight.
