With auto insurance rates hitting Louisiana families hard, especially those with teen drivers, many are wondering what they can do to save. While sweeping legislative reform is underway, Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple says there are steps individuals can take today to ease the burden.

“We all want lower rates right now,” Temple said. “But real change takes time. In the meantime, there are practical things every driver should be doing to get the best deal possible.”

Shop Your Insurance Every Year

If you’ve been with the same insurance company for years, you might be overpaying. Temple recommends comparison shopping every year—even if you love your agent.

“Loyalty doesn’t usually equal lower prices,” Temple explained. “These companies look at your policy 12 months at a time. They’re not rewarding 20 years without a claim.”

Use both independent and direct agents to get quotes from multiple carriers. What was competitive last year may not be today.

Ask About Hidden Discounts

Many drivers are eligible for discounts they don’t even know exist. Good student discounts, safe driver rewards, low mileage credits, bundling home and auto—ask about all of them.

“Insurance is incredibly price-sensitive,” Temple said. “If companies want your business, they know they have to compete.”

Anti-theft devices, driver safety courses, even your job title can sometimes unlock savings. Ask your agent to run through every option.

Increase Your Deductible (If You Can Afford It)

If you’re a safe driver who rarely files claims, a higher deductible might be worth the risk. Raising your deductible from $500 to $1,000 can reduce your premium significantly but be sure you have the funds available in case of an accident.

Clean Up Your Driving Record

It sounds obvious, but tickets and fender benders stick with you and they cost you. Avoid distractions, obey speed limits, and consider taking a defensive driving course, which can sometimes reduce points and premiums.

Bundle Your Policies

Homeowners, renters, or anyone with multiple vehicles should consider bundling. Most providers offer meaningful discounts when you carry more than one policy with them.

Bonus Tip: Don’t Be Afraid to Walk Away

Temple says consumers have more power than they realize. “You’re not locked in. You can and should walk away from a provider if you’re not getting a competitive rate,” he said.
