I don't need much convincing to eat watermelon. I love fruit, especially this sweet, juicy treat that does amazing things for our bodies. I will get to the benefits in a few. First, here are a few facts on where they come from and how they grow.

Watermelons are the fruit of a plant with an exterior, known as a rind, that by the way is not as tough as it looks. The flesh is soft, juicy, and sweet. They grow on a vine and the origin of this delicious fruit is Southern Africa.

Three things are needed to grow watermelon: water, the sun, and honey bees. The bees must pollinate every single blossom in order for the yellow blooms to fruit. Watermelons are grown in rows and raised in sandy soil beds so the soil can drain. A vine can spread out 6 to 8 feet, producing watermelons in as little as 3 months.

The rind is delicate, so a watermelon needs to be handpicked. Look for a pale yellow spot on the bottom and that lets you know it's ripe. The real magic happens when you eat one. The health benefits are incredible!

I don't know about you, but I was shocked to learn watermelons have such a major impact on our bodies and overall health. I know one thing though, I am going to go get one today! I am also going to go out of my way to incorporate watermelon into my diet at least once a week from here on out.
