Lake Charles, Louisiana (KNGT-FM) - Wednesday was the College Football Early Signing Day, and it was a nice start for Head Coach Matt Viator and the McNeese Cowboys. McNeese announced the signing of 17 players to the class, which is ranked No. 1 in the Southland Conference and No. 13 in the entire FCS, according to 247Sports.

The landscape of College Athletics is a little bit different from the last time Matt Viator donned the sidelines of Navarre Stadium. The Cowboys, like most programs, will take the next few months leading up to National Signing Day in February in 4 phases, Wednesday was just the first.

McNeese Signs 17 Players On Early Signing Day

Wednesday, the Cowboys locked down 4 Junior College signees and 13 High School signees. Over the next month, McNeese will be able to look at junior college guys. On January 2nd, the Transfer Portal will officially open and will likely be as chaotic as usual. National Signing Day on February 4th will round out the recruiting phases for McNeese.

Coach Viator said he is very excited about this class. Some high school players who committed to McNeese have not yet signed, and the transfer portal will reopen in January. “This is just the first phase,” Viator said. “We’ll bring in more kids over the next few weeks.”
