Louisiana in the Crosshairs: FBI Warns of Email Scam Spreading from Texas
KNGT-Lake Charles - Last week, we reported that Texas was dealing with a serious email threat, but now, it looks like the problem has made its way to Louisiana. The FBI has issued a severe warning to Gmail and Outlook users in the Bayou State, and it's got a lot of folks on edge. Most of us use email every day, whether for work, personal use, or both, so this alert hits close to home. The warning is about a dangerous ransomware called Medusa, which has already affected hundreds of people and is now spreading fast.
It's never good when the FBI gets involved. The FBI has issued a severe warning to Louisiana users of Gmail and Outlook.
This is worrisome because most of us, if not all of us, use email for some reason, whether it be personal or professional. We use it for both and often have many email addresses. If this applies to you, you should definitely take note of it.
A few days ago, the FBI and several other agencies issued a cybersecurity notice about a ransomware variant known as Medusa.
What is Medusa?
Medusa uses all-too-common phishing techniques in an attempt to get all of your personal information. It's common for ransomware to extort you. In other words, you will be charged for the return of your data.
When these scammers and hackers use your information to steal your identity, bank account details, and really anything else you can think of, it's awful.
According to one accusation, this group has targeted more than 300 people using Medusa malware. Despite being active since 2021, the number of victims has increased for this group.
